Okay, but could use some "oomph"

It's not a bad game, it's just not that exciting. The randomly-appearing items don't help much, either--several times in my first playthrough was there gas behind a rock, so I couldn't reach it.

The fact that the game speeds up after a while is nice, but there isn't any real motivation to move ahead if nothing else changes. Spruce it up with some new obstacles that only show up later on or something; just having the game get faster isn't enough to keep it interesting.

Good job, though! Good luck on your next projects, and if you do end up making the sequel I hope it'll be great.

Swamp7hing responds:

Hey Mr. Johnson,
Thanks for giving my game a try and reviewing it! I've already started addressing the item-spawns-behind-others issue in the sequel, so that shouldn't be a problem. As this was the first game, there are bound to be some unpolished elements.
I realize that the only actual obstacle is the boulders, but as well, that's not the case in the next game. ;)
Thanks for playing, commenting, and wishing me luck - feedback is the most valuable thing in game development.

Coming along well

The controls are smooth, the physics work nicely, and it looks like this is going to be a very fun game. Some suggestions I have for the final product include a way to attack (unless it's a hop & bop, but some other attack would be a welcome addition), additional interactive elements if you think you can use them (you got switches so far, that's good), and a neat presentation that lays out the levels, menus and stuff nicely (although I'm sure you're already working on that).

Not much to say, really! Just give it an identity to make it unique and interesting, and I'm sure it will be great. I must say that I'm intrigued to see how this will end up.

Bluefox77 responds:

Thanks, I won't be making an attack action for this game (my Metroid flash will though), it'll be more based on puzzles and dodging opponents ( however I might do a 2D shooting scroller involving ship when travelling between two of the areas during the game). Although I haven't made the menu layout yet, I'll be going for a more futuristic layout (the protagonist is a robot), I like Dead Space's colour scheme so that's a potential influence.

As for interactive elements, I'll be adding more hazard possibilities and objectives for each stage.

Great, but physics could use some help

A very unique and addicting concept--the only big problem I have is with the "spin" of the ball. The fact that it's there at all is impressive, but in my opinion it's too strong for its own good. For instance, in the level "Downstairs," as the ball was rolling to the left, it very often bounced sharply to the right, and that really injured the experience for me. Other than that, the game is fantastic. Great job!

Akxs responds:

Thanks for your comment :)

While this mechanic may be a bit off-putting at first, in the later levels it is a necessity to you it and it's a whole new element that you have to master, it renews the concept. It also allows you to register incredible high-scores! :D

Fun! ...but a bit buggy

Nice job on this! It's a really fun game and I really enjoyed it; it was pretty unique and had a nice theme going for it. Nevertheless, there were a few bugs, the most notable being the disappearance of all of the clouds when you got even a tiny bit close to the bottom half of the screen. Fix that and the game will be even more fun!

Jellyy responds:

Thanks! I was going for unique here, and yeah I'm cracking down on the bugs. Glad it was fun for you!

Great

Fantastic job on this game! I don't know what those other reviewers were smoking when they played this game; this game is MUCH better than people are giving it credit for. I guess people aren't giving this game their time and are only playing the game with a ship they don't like without even checking out the other ones, and that's the best part of the game! The ships are varied greatly; that's something one doesn't usually see in shmups and the designed you picked were frech and inventive.

Nevertheless, there were a few wierd glitches that made the game a bit irritating. For instance, there's always an irritating "booooop, booooop" sound in the background, at random points the framerate goes spastically fast, and the credits don't show, like that other helpful chap already mentioned. And the sound is funky too, but I'm sure you already know that. :P

So yeah! Great job, and don't worry about all the bad reviews. It's fact that this is a very good game.

Skeik responds:

Thanks. My friend Tim actually came up with a lot of the ideas for the games ships.

I'm going over and seeing if I can take care of the booop glitch. It's such a weird issue and I think I understand why it's there. I hate dealing with sounds in flash. The sounds are the things that are messing everything up, and I just don't know why :P Like, even the super high frame rate for half a second is a bug contributed to the sound. I'm pretty sure I can't fix the spastic frame rate, but I can try to fix the freakin boop boop tommorow.

Thanks for the review.

Great concept

What fun! This game sent my head in circles. Great idea, better execution. Glad it made front page!

JGames responds:

glad aswel :)

What a great song

The game itself is a nice minute-waster, and the animation is really impressive... but you couldn't have picked a better song! I come back to this game all the time just to hear the song. It's just that great!

And yes, make a sequel if you have the time because this game has a lot of untapped potential.

KamikazePanda responds:

Bro buy there album(s)!!!! They have a song called wet gold which i can get lost in, other great stuff too!!!!!!!!!

Really awsome, but...

...it's a little to hard to anticipate the saws, especially when you're tunning really fast. Sometimes the !'s don't even show up in time! Maybe use that big, giant empty space at the bottom of the screen to include a map of where the saws are so even when one is going super fast, the saws won't appear out of nowhere Great game though! Maybe you could even add a slide action and add a sort of bridge you have to slide under, like a lot of those "jump/slide/dive" games, but that might be too cliche. :P Still, great job for your fist game!

Maxwelldoggums responds:

ok, I'll work on that. Thanks for the review!

Pretty Sweet

Very great concept; you took the run & jump platformer to the next level, and for that, I salute you.

The style and presentation are also top notch, and so is the music (great song selection, by the way). I was also happy to find a game that had a hard mode that actually IS hard. :D The modes and customization are also very, very great additions. Great job; keep up the good stuff.

PS: I found a glitch! There is a way to jump on top of the alien ship at the top of the level, but you can't get down; you can only go higher and try to reach oblivion.

Wurmy responds:

Thanks xD By I think your thingy got messed up. Oh well, thanks for everything :D

Pretty sweet

My only complaint is the funkiness of the ball's physics sometimes, as it goes through blocks when it shouldn't, making it very easy to rack up big combos. But that doesn't mean this game isn't great! Very good job.

LoneWolf-MX responds:

Thanks anyways, got any ideas on how to keep it interesting?
